Gift Card Scams

Here are some worthwhile tips to avoid getting scammed with gift cards.

  • Only purchase gift cards from a reputable seller or from one of the store locations that will eventually honour the gift card.
  • Never buy gift cards from auction sites and only buy gift cards online from the actual store website of the store that will honour the card.
  • Register the gift card. Attach a picture of the card numbers on the rear of the card and set the expiry for 12 months.
  • Pay on a Credit Card as you can cancel the payment for goods not supplied.
  • If the gift card is for someone else, keep the details of the card and call the store to make sure it was used before it expires.
  • Don’t assume store gift cards are always secured and haven’t been tampered with. Take your time and carefully examine the card and ask about the online details. Look for signs of card tampering such as exposed numbers that should be covered by lotto scratchy type grey film. If in doubt ask to see a few cards and choose one.
  • Keep your receipt (proof of purchase). If you lose the card show the service desk your receipt and have them issue you a replacement gift card.
  • Ask the service desk read the card at the time of purchase to ensure that gift card you buy is valid and has the correct balance.
  • No reputable business will require your personal details, bank account information or date of birth to purchase a gift card. There is no need to provide any personal information – so question if their request for unnecessary information or anything irrelevant to purchasing a gift card. You’re not applying for credit.
